About University of Southern California

The University of Southern California, commonly known as Southern California, Southern Cal, USC or simply SC, is a private, nonsectarian, research university, located in the University Park neighborhood, in Los Angeles, which is the 2nd largest city in USA, as well as the largest one in the US state of California and the Western United States, having a population of nearly 4 000.000 inhabitants.

USC was founded in 1880, by a German Jewish banker named Isiah Hellmann, a Methodist horticulturist called Ozro Childs and the Irish Catholic former-Governor, John Gately Downey, being the oldest private research university in California. Since it first opened its doors to students, the university grew, having today an enrollment of nearly 17 000 students, being classified by the U.S. News & World Report as one of the ‘’ most selective universities’’.

The athletic teams from USC are known as the USC Trojans, who compete in the NCAA Division I-A Pacific-10 Conference, in various sports. The Trojans have won 109 total team championships, 89 of which are NCAA national championships, without including college football championships which are not calculated in the NCAA.
